Author(s): Daniel Fynn

Abstract

Ore usually occurs mixed with precious metals and base metals. These minerals are pulverized and dissolved with fluxing agent, heated at a reducing atmosphere where precious metals form alloy with lead. The precious metals are separated from the base metals in a process called “cupellation” using a small shallow cup-like vessels called cupel; heating is done in oxidizing atmosphere.
